Backyard weddings are intimate, personal, and incredibly special—but they come with a unique set of challenges. Whether you’re planning your own or photographing one, here are a few things I’ve learned from shooting these beautiful at-home celebrations:

DO:
✅ Plan for weather even if it’s “never” rained that time of year.
✅ Rent quality lighting and a sound system. Backyard weddings can quickly feel like a backyard BBQ without intentional atmosphere.
✅ Hire a coordinator or designate someone to run point. You will need a traffic cop for vendors, timelines, and guests.
✅ Communicate parking and bathroom options clearly to guests.

DON’T:
🚫 Don’t underestimate how much setup and teardown goes into a wedding day.
🚫 Don’t assume guests will “just mingle” create intentional spaces for conversation, games, or lounging.
🚫 Don’t forget to account for lighting after dark! Cafe lights, lanterns, or flood lights will keep the party going (and the photos looking beautiful).
Backyard weddings are full of personality. They allow for custom details, family-style dinners, dogs in the ceremony, and dancing under the stars. If done right, they’re unforgettable. I’ve photographed some of the most heartfelt, joy-filled moments in someone’s own backyard, because it’s not about perfection. It’s about people. And that’s what really matters.
Planning a backyard wedding full of heart and personal touches? I specialize in capturing the moments that matter most—whether you’re at a venue or right in your own backyard. Let’s talk details and see if we’re a good fit.
