Tips For Your Wedding
If you’re looking for the kind of wedding photos that feel timeless, grand, and undeniably Kansas City—Union Station is one of the best spots to make it happen. Whether you’re getting married nearby or just want to sneak away for portraits, this historic gem gives bridal party photos a bold, elegant backdrop that never goes out of style.
As a photographer, I’ve taken countless couples and their wedding parties here, and it always delivers. The architecture is jaw-dropping, the light is dreamy, and the vibe strikes this beautiful balance between formal and fun. It’s the kind of setting that elevates your day without feeling stuffy.
Let’s talk about the drama—in the best way. From the soaring ceilings and marble floors to the massive arched windows and gold details, everything about Union Station feels larger than life. Your bridal party instantly looks like they’re part of an editorial spread, even if you’re keeping your wedding vibe more relaxed.
But what makes it extra special is how versatile the space is. You can go full glam or stay laid-back and playful. The classic columns, ornate chandeliers, and soft window light give you options. Whether you want structured group shots or something a little more spontaneous, this space gives us room to breathe and be creative.
When couples plan for Union Station photos, we usually build in about 30–45 minutes between the ceremony and reception (or right after getting ready) to head over. The location is super convenient—right in the heart of the city—and offers plenty of indoor space in case of weather issues (hello, unpredictable Midwest weddings!).
And bonus: there’s a parking garage, wide staircases, and nearby spots for your party bus or transportation, which makes getting in and out with a full bridal party way easier than some other downtown locations.
Here are a few go-to photo moments I love capturing inside Union Station:
The Grand Hall: That center shot with the massive chandeliers and sweeping ceiling is iconic for a reason. It’s great for both group shots and romantic couple portraits.
The Windows: The natural light that floods in from the massive arched windows gives the most beautiful, soft glow—perfect for detail shots and dreamy close-ups.
The Mezzanine: A quieter spot with elevated views of the station, great for a few peaceful moments in the midst of the day.
The Front Steps: If we have time, an exterior shot with the bridal party in front of the building’s massive columns always turns heads. It’s bold, clean, and classic Kansas City.
If you’re thinking about Union Station for photos, here are a few pro tips:
Let your photographer handle the permits. While many sessions go smoothly without one, Union Station technically requires a permit for professional photography—especially on weekends or in busy seasons. I’ve got you covered and can help navigate that process!
Comfortable shoes are a must. There’s a bit of walking involved, so I always suggest bringing a pair of flats for the in-between moments.
Build it into your timeline. You don’t want to feel rushed—giving this space a little time helps you relax and enjoy it (and trust me, your photos will reflect that).
What I love most about shooting at Union Station is how it elevates your photos without overshadowing your story. Even with all the grandeur, the focus still stays on you—your joy, your people, your real connections.
And when you look back at those shots years from now, they’ll still hold that sense of wonder and timeless Kansas City charm.
If you’re planning a wedding in Kansas City and thinking about Union Station for your portraits, I’d love to help you create something unforgettable. Whether you’re all about elegance or ready to have fun with your crew, I’ll be there to capture the real, the beautiful, and everything in between.
